HARRY DAGOE SUHARYADI BIOGRAPHY
Harry Dagoe (Harry Suharyadi) is an Indonesian filmmaker whose body of work spans the transitional period of the country’s cinema, from its years of dormancy to its gradual revival.
A graduate of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ), Dagoe first gained international recognition through his short film Happy Ending (1996), which screened at festivals including Toronto, Palm Springs, Tampere, and Singapore, and received the Outstanding Short Award at the inaugural Busan International Film Festival.
During a period when Indonesian film production had significantly declined, Dagoe remained active through television, directing and producing several acclaimed series, including Mencari Pelangi and Ratu Malu & Jendral Kancil, which earned national awards for directing, screenwriting, and producing.
In 1999, after receiving a Fellowship from the Japanese Government, he directed his first feature film, Pachinko & Everyone’s Happy (2000), a Japanese–Indonesian co-production that several critics regarded as part of the early wave of modern Indonesian cinema’s revival.
Across his career, Dagoe has completed 12 feature films, exploring a wide range of forms—from popular narrative cinema to more experimental and contemplative works. His film Love Potpourri was nominated for Best Asian Film at the Singapore International Film Festival (2009), while Sunya (2016), a meditation on Javanese mysticism, was described as “sublime” by critics at the Singapore International Film Festival and nominated at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival.
His latest film, ZUHGYAK (Terikat Jalan Setan), marks a return to themes that have long shaped his work: belief, ritual, and the moral ambiguities that quietly shape contemporary Indonesian society.
